You woulda thunk that the world was on fire, the way Mike jumped out of bed this morning. I lifted my head from blissful slumber on my comfy dog bed next to his side of the bed and noticed the clock said a mere 5:45 am. What was he thinking. I heard him quietly pad down the hallway and down the stairs. Next thing I hear is the door to his truck open and close. I jumped up on the bed to get a better vantage point by which to see what he was up to so early in the morning. I saw him carrying a medium-sized box back to the house. When I heard the door open again, I could tell he was on a mission. As I reached the bottom of the stairs, I could hear the coffee grinder whirl and grind those little beans into a fine powder. He put the water into the back of the coffee maker and placed the glass pot underneath where the black stuff comes out.
Then he got a pair of scissors and opened the box he brought in from the truck. It was full of paper and then a plastic bag with colored paper in it. I was really excited about seeing what was in the bag, but Kathy came down the stairs and informed us that she needed to go out. I could have held it a little longer in anticipation of what was in that bag, but no, she said it was now or there was going to be trouble. It was the kind of trouble you really didn't want to experience first thing on Mother's Day. Believe me! So Mike took Kathy and me outside for our morning outing around the fellowship building and back to the house. Just as Mike finished pouring the coffee to take up to his best friend Beth, she showed up in the hallway looking like she'd been hit with a sleepy stick. He embraced her and wished her a happy Mother's Day. Together they went into the living room where he handed her the cup of coffee and the plastic bag with the colored paper. She sat in her favorite chair, the little white leather recliner that I am never, never, never, never, never to sit in. Slowly, too slowly for my taste, she opened the bag and pulled out one gift at a time. The first thing was an apron that said Lutheran Mom on it. The second was a daily calendar with little sayings on it for each day. The third was the tiniest little bar of chocolate with some foreign language on it, and a little bag of Lutheran coffee, that was just heavenly. And last but not least was a big mug that read "Lutheran Chick" with a picture of a little chicken on it.
After all that Mike ran to shower so he could get to the Church Council meeting by 7:30 am. Whose idea was that, to have a cc meeting at 7:30 on Mother's Day? I don't know, but I bet it wasn't a mother. At church they had muffins for mothers and fresh fruit, but I'm not allowed at church on Sundays when all the people are there. Beth said that Mike gave all the women of the congregation a holy kiss during children's time. She certainly had my attention, but then went on to say that they were Hershey kisses. I bet the Lutherans were relieved about that. They don't even like shaking hands.
After church the house got busy as Beth and Mike prepared a special Lasagne dinner for Jack and Sali, Mike's parents, in honor of Mother's Day. They also bought Sali a Japanese Maple tree that I hope to be able to check out later, once it is planted. After dinner Beth had to work with the teacher she mentors, while Mike watered the garden. Then they went to a birthday party for friends.
We are finally settling down for the evening. Beth is reading the paper. Mike is unwinding from a busy day. Kathy is slowly slipping into la la land and I've snuck into the office to catch up on some blogging.
I hope everyone had a blessed Mother's Day! I know Beth did; she heard from all of her litter.
